Alright, kiddies, lets do this.

I've been out of the music scene for half a decade now, so I don't know what's cool anymore (if I ever did).

I'm looking for some good leads for building a collection of dubstep, and I need the help of you young whippersnappers. I have nothing to offer in return, other than running your guild, hosting this website and ventrilo, a minecraft server, a D&D game, and enough wordplay that its not even punny anymore.

So here's the rules:

Post dubstep, and I'll tell you what I like and dislike about it. Maybe together we can find some nasty beats. I'll list my top 5 tracks, in order, at the top of the page. Winner gets an internets (half an internets for a good try).

What I like about the songs I've heard so far - nasty breaks and bass, decent beats. The nastier the better, but not the overuse of juxtaposing quirky 8-bit sounds with bass drops just to create false dissonance. Harmony and rhythm are not mutually exclusive with nasty beats. That said, it is the nasty drops that form the core of what differentiates dubstep, so bring it on, just know the difference between someone thats winning because they have tigerblood, and someone thats just dropping jarring sounds because they don't know better.

What I don't like - Lyrics that sound like they're taken from a british pop song. I generally prefer my dance music to not have lyrics, but I do like certain lyrics. When done well, they enhance the song, but most are kinda annoying. Haunting female vocals over nasty basslines right as the song breaks? Good job. Falsetto fags flinging their fucking feelings all over my earbones? No bueno, motherfuckers.

Remember - ladies love lyrics, but bass be for boys.

Not a big fan of that song, tbh. I'm already familiar with it, as it seems to be one of the more popular examples of the genre.

There's a lot I do like about the song, though. The main "nice sprites" part of the tune has a decent structure and sound. As well, the other half, the "scary monsters" bass line is also decent, and kinda nasty too.

The main issue I have is how he drops the beat halfway through and changes bpm a few times in the middle for no discernible reason. Its too jarring for too long. I don't mind dissonance in my music (hell, I like Skinny Puppy), but it seemed to be dissonant in a way that was overdone for its own sake.

I guess I just didn't get the middle, especially from 0:40 to 0:56, but I do really like the way the song ends.

Give me something nastier, but dancier.

EDIT - I hate that kid's voice. That might be what ruins it more than anything.

I like that better than the Skrillex song above. Still, I can't get past how grating that electronic horn sound is. It sounds like someone is scraping the Ocarina of Time across a chalkboard.

The bass part is pretty good, but the intro and happy part is a bit too happy. I understand the juxtaposition of happy/hardcore is what makes the genre, but again this is just too jarring for me.

But I do really like the nasty parts.

Let me put this out there:

My favorite artist so far (in my very limited searching) is Bassnectar. It seems, based on what others are saying, that he's not pure dubsteb, but a bit of a hybrid offshoot. I'd love to find something similar to him, but more dubsteppy.

Ok so those Ephixa songs are more my style. Seems like a lot of that isn't dubstep, though.

Diamond Grinder was good, but a bit heavy on the high frequencies.
Spaceweed was good, and probably my favorite.
Song of Storms was also good, but the video game influence was a bit too heavy. Same with Bad Apple, which was hardstyle though.
Did not like the Charlie Sheen crap. Kinda ruined an otherwise decent song.
Really liked Always Bored, but it seemed house-y.
3 was fun, but a bit jazz-hands for my tastes.
Everlasting Sound and Trance Chords were quite good, but not quite dubstep.

Overall, I liked it. I'm definitely going to check out more stuff by Ephixa.
